Range of use The Funcosil Test Plate can be used on all plane, cementitious, capillary active or hydrophobically treated building materials such as brick, sandlime brick, render, concrete and natural stone. The method allows the absorption of water to be measured in an uncomplicated manner directly on the object without causing any damage. In the case of faced masonry work surfaces, ▪ the facing brick (brick, clinker, sandlime brick) can be measures as well as ▪ the joint mortar (especially in the area where joints cross) in interaction with the facing brick.
Executing the test ▪ Clean the cementing ridge on the Funcosil Test Plate before using each time and allow to dry. ▪ Remove any loose material and dust, etc. on the surface of the building material to be tested. ▪ Apply a strand of a butyl compound* to the cementing ridge and fix the Funcosil Test Plate in place by pressing onto the surface of the wall to be tested. To ensure that the plate is water tight, place an additional strand of the butyl sealing compound around the Funcosil Test Plate and press tightly. Pay attention to roughness and recessed joints on the building material. Attach the Funcosil Test Plate so that the feeding tube is always vertical. ▪ Fill the feeding tube of the Funcosil Test Plate with water up to the top graduation (0 ml). Measure the time (with a stop watch) it takes until the water column sinks to 10 ml and record this value. ▪ Refill the feeding tube of the Funcosil Test Plate with water up to the top graduation mark (0 ml). The absorption of liquid is measured in ml. The time it takes until the water column sinks to 10 ml is measured again. This process is repeated until water absorption has been measured for 15 minutes. ▪ After the test has been concluded, carefully remove the Funcosil Test Plate from the substrate with a filling knife. Remove any remains of the butyl sealing compound* from the surface of the building material and from the Funcosil Test Plate. * e.g. Teroson VII, plastic sealing cord, round profile 10 mm, black. Art. No. 122.46 Z or Terostat IX, Karo series sealing compound, permanently elastic and kneadable, grey, Art. No. 265492, made by Henkel Loctite Deutschland GmbH, Arabellastraße 17, Munich, Germany, Tel. 0049 89 92680.
Notes The area ratios joint/stone change with the width of the joint. The ratio is: For a joint 15 mm wide: 37% joint area 63% stone area For a joint 12 mm wide: 30% joint area 70% stone area For a joint 10 mm wide: approx. 25% joint area approx. 75% stone area The absorption of water on the entire facade area (stone and joint) can be determined before and after hydrophobizing impregnation measures are carried out. This nondestructive method for measuring water absorption with the Funcosil Test Plate allows the wvalue to be determined directly on the object without any complications. The wvalue (water absorption coefficient) is determined in kg/m² h0.5. The determination is carried out by reading the quantity of water absorbed in ml/test area after 15 minutes. The measured value of water that has penetrated during this time is multiplied by a factor of 0.25 and can be given directly in kg/m² h0.5.
Example: Water absorption after 15 minutes was 30 ml: 30 ml x factor 0.25 = w-value 7.5 kg/m² h0.5.
The Test Plate is attached with a butyl sealing compound. Use a filling knife to remove the test plate.
